Learn what maqam is
Maqam is not just a scale. It is a way of moving, resting, and shaping melodic character. This page separates the core terms and symbols before you move to detailed maqam pages.
Maqam terms
Start here so a maqam page does not become only names and degrees without a listening meaning.
Maqam
A melodic framework with notes, relationships, behavior, and character. The key is hearing how it moves and settles, not memorizing a scale only.
Jins
A smaller melodic unit inside a maqam that helps explain its internal structure.
Tonic / resting note
The main point of rest. When the phrase feels like it has arrived home, it is often close to the tonic.
Ghammaz
An important degree that may serve as a temporary resting or modulation point inside the maqam.
Melodic path
The way a maqam moves upward, downward, and toward rest. Two maqamat may share notes but differ in melodic behavior.
Maqam signs and accidentals
These symbols help you read maqam notation, especially when the music uses microtonal Arabic intervals.
Flat
Lowers the note by a semitone.
Sharp
Raises the note by a semitone.
Half-flat
A key symbol in Arabic notation, indicating a lowering smaller than a full flat.
Half-sharp
Raises the note by a smaller amount than a full sharp in some Eastern notation contexts.
Natural
Cancels the previous accidental and returns the note to its natural form.
Example from Musicatea
Open Rast or Bayati. First read the tonic, then the jins and melodic path. After that, open a related piece from the library and try to hear where the melody settles.
