Context and Origin

Ayyub, or Ayoub, belongs to the family of short binary rhythms, and in Egypt it is also known as Zaar because of its association with the popular zaar ritual. Modern references describe it as used primarily in Sufi music, while also appearing in some popular music and belly dance contexts. Its core character is fast, short, and circular, meaning that its feel depends more on repeated, pressing rotation than on spaciousness or relaxation. References also note a common embellishment consisting of an early Tek in the first half of the cycle; as the tempo increases, that Tek tends to shift slightly later until it nearly attaches itself to the second Dum.

Meter and Use

Ayoub is used as a rhythmic template for feeling the 2/4 meter. Start from the first Dum, then connect the Taks and rests to the movement of the melody or song.
