Context and Origin

Muhajjar is an Arabic 14/4 rhythm associated clearly with the muwashshah repertory, and modern references present it as one of the common extended cycles used in that genre. Contemporary source material identifies it in muwashshahat such as Hajrani Habibi, and performance-oriented explanations note that one of its most recognizable aural markers is an opening built on three consecutive Dum strokes. Some pedagogical schools explain its internal grouping as 4+2+4+4, but that is more useful for counting and analysis than as the only valid performed realization. The academically precise framing is therefore not only to name its meter, but also to locate it in the muwashshah tradition, where the breadth of the cycle functions as part of the expressive design rather than as meter alone.

Meter and Use

Muhajjar is used as a rhythmic template for feeling the 14/4 meter. Start from the first Dum, then connect the Taks and rests to the movement of the melody or song.
