Context and Origin
Ciftetelli, also written Jiftitelli, is a rhythm of Turkish origin that entered Arabic music and became established within it. Modern references define its function quite precisely: it is rarely used to carry a fully composed melody from beginning to end, and its main role is to accompany improvisation, whether vocal or instrumental. This sharply distinguishes it from rhythms such as Masmudi Kabir or Sama'i Thaqil, which are more strongly tied to composed structures. In notation it may appear in 8/4 when performed slowly and expansively, in which case it may share the general tempo and mood of Masmudi Kabir. But when performed lighter and faster it comes very close to Wahda w Noss in 4/4, and may exchange with it and with Maqsum in performance. Its identity therefore lies not only in meter, but in function and temporal feeling.
Meter and Use
Ciftetelli is used as a rhythmic template for feeling the 4/4 meter. Start from the first Dum, then connect the Taks and rests to the movement of the melody or song.
